Discover Cafè Giotto

Tucked along the lively stretch of 42 Church St, Montclair, NJ 07042, United States, Cafè Giotto feels like the kind of neighborhood Italian spot you stumble upon once-and then keep coming back to. I first walked in on a chilly Friday evening after hearing a local friend rave about their handmade pasta. By the end of the night, I understood why the restaurant consistently earns glowing reviews from Montclair regulars and visitors alike.

The atmosphere hits that sweet spot between cozy and polished. Exposed brick walls, warm lighting, and the low hum of conversation make it equally fitting for a casual dinner or a date night. From my experience dining there multiple times over the past year, the service has remained attentive without being intrusive. Servers know the menu inside out, and when I once asked about the difference between their marinara and pomodoro sauces, the explanation wasn’t rushed-it covered the tomato variety, simmering time, and seasoning approach. That level of detail signals a kitchen that cares.

Let’s talk about the menu. Italian cuisine, at its core, is about simplicity and ingredient quality. According to the Italian Trade Agency, authentic Italian cooking relies heavily on seasonal produce, olive oil, fresh herbs, and regional cheeses. You can taste that philosophy here. The house-made gnocchi, for example, arrives pillowy and light-never dense. On one visit, I ordered it with a sage brown butter sauce, and the balance between richness and freshness was spot on. The pasta is reportedly prepared daily, which aligns with traditional methods recommended by culinary institutions like the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners.

Their wood-fired pizza deserves attention too. The crust carries that slight char and chew associated with high-temperature ovens, similar to the Neapolitan style recognized by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana. While I’m not claiming it’s strictly certified, the blistered edges and soft center suggest careful technique. A Margherita pizza here isn’t overloaded with toppings; instead, it highlights fresh mozzarella, vibrant tomato sauce, and basil that actually tastes like basil. Simple, balanced, and satisfying.

Seafood options round out the offerings. I once brought a colleague who ordered the branzino, and we were both impressed by the crisp skin and tender interior. The preparation was straightforward-olive oil, lemon, herbs-which allowed the fish to shine. That restraint speaks volumes. Overcomplicating dishes can mask quality; here, the kitchen lets the ingredients lead.

Beyond food, the wine list is thoughtfully curated. Italian reds like Chianti and Barbera pair beautifully with the richer pasta dishes, while crisp Pinot Grigio complements seafood. Staff members are comfortable suggesting pairings based on your preferences, not just the most expensive bottle. That builds trust, especially for guests who may not be wine experts.

From a practical standpoint, the location on Church Street makes it easy to combine dinner with a stroll through downtown Montclair. Parking can be competitive during peak hours, which is worth noting, but nearby public lots usually solve the issue. Reservations are recommended on weekends; in my experience, walk-ins may face a short wait, especially during the dinner rush.

What stands out most is consistency. I’ve visited during busy Saturday nights and quieter weekday evenings, and the quality hasn’t dipped. That reliability is often what separates a good Italian restaurant from a great neighborhood staple. Online reviews frequently mention friendly service, generous portions, and a welcoming ambiance, and those comments align closely with what I’ve observed firsthand.

If there’s any limitation, it’s that the space isn’t enormous, so large groups should call ahead. Still, that smaller footprint adds to the charm. Dining here feels personal, not corporate.

For anyone exploring Montclair’s dining scene, this spot delivers a well-rounded experience-thoughtful menu design, authentic Italian flavors, attentive service, and a location that places you right in the heart of town. Whether you’re craving fresh pasta, wood-fired pizza, or a relaxed evening with good wine and better conversation, this Church Street address continues to earn its reputation one plate at a time.

  • Highly recommend the desserts and gelato. The Italian dishes here are good too, but the dessert for me really makes this place incredible. In the past 30 days, I've visited at least 4x and each time I had the straciatella gelato. Worth it to try here!

  • Because of all the good reviews of this place, I wanted to try it since it's been sitting in my bookmarks for so long ! Finally was able to try it out and a couple things I must say -- It's a great place to eat at when the weather is nice as they have seating outdoors. Inside is quite small, though I'm not sure if there was more seating in the back since I kept seeing people walk back there... Onto the food ! The sourdough you get in the beginning was so nice -- warm, crispy, and fluffy. The perfect, rustic sourdough. The house focaccia came in an unexpected fashion, but it was so good. A nice focaccia with some caremlized onion topped with arugula and balsamic glaze - yum. The Caesar salad was good, but nothing exceptional. We enjoyed the pasta for the pasta itself, and the clams were delicious, but we both came to the conclusion that the sauces might have needed just a little more garlic but this is probably just our personal preference. The way the pasta itself was made, though, was so good and chewy, you could tell they're made right there. Service was great! The water refill just kept coming it was honestly quite amazing. We could pour the water ourselves but it's like they never gave us the chance to. Staff were all kind and bustling around. We saw some servers bring out lasagna and honestly that looked perfect so I would want to try that. Would I come back here ? Maybe. But I would recommend this place for someone to try out if they wanted proper pasta.

  • Such a cute, local spot in downtown Montclair. It's not a big place at all - cafe is right. The espresso drinks were great and the traditional Italian food makes you feel like you're transported to Italy itself! Pastries hit the spot too. If you can get a seat, grab it and enjoy.

  • Was craving pasta and lasagna so decided to give this spot a try. The portions were great, flavors were on point, the environment is warm and welcoming, staff was pleasant & had a great experience overall. The panna cotta & hot chocolate was a great way to finish up a late lunch.
